Five Encouraging Verses from the Didache

The Didache is a brief early Christian text written in the first century AD. Here are some encouraging passages from the text:

“My child, remember night and day him who speaks the word of God to you, and honour him as you do the Lord. For wherever the lordly rule is uttered, there is the Lord.” (ch. 4)

This passage encourages believers to honour and remember those who teach the word of God.

“Watch for your life’s sake. Let not your lamps be quenched, nor your loins unloosed; but be ready, for you know not the hour in which our Lord will come.” (ch. 16)

This passage encourages believers to be vigilant and prepared for the coming of the Lord.

“Be not a stretcher forth of the hands to receive and a drawer of them back to give.” (ch. 4)

This passage encourages believers to be generous and giving.

“Give to everyone who asks you, and ask it not back; for the Father wills that to all should be given of our own blessings (free gifts).” (ch. 1)

This passage encourages believers to be selfless and giving, even to those who may take advantage of their generosity.

“But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites, for they fast on the second (Mondays) and fifth day (Thursdays) of the week. Rather, fast on the fourth day (Wednesday) and the Preparation (Friday).” (ch. 8)

This passage encourages believers to fast for spiritual reasons, rather than for show or to impress others.
