Do Not Fear the Future

In these current times of uncertainty and change, we need to remind ourselves not to fear the future because God is our refuge.

In a world filled with challenges, uncertainties, trials, civil strife and war, it is easy to become anxious about what the future holds. We may worry about our health, our jobs, our families, or the state of the world. However, the Bible itself reminds us that we should not be consumed by fear. Why? Because God is with us. “Behold I command thee, take courage, and be strong. Fear not and be not dismayed: because the Lord thy God is with thee in all things whatsoever thou shalt go to.” (Joshua 1:9)

The Psalmist, in Psalm 45:2 (46:1), declares, “Our God is our refuge and strength: a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly.” This verse serves as a reminder that we have a steadfast and unwavering source of strength and protection in God. We need not face the future with trepidation, for our heavenly Father is with us every step of the way.

What does it mean for God to be our refuge? It means that, no matter what challenges we encounter, we can turn to Him in prayer and trust that He will provide us with the strength and guidance we need. God is our shelter in the storms of life, our safe haven amidst the trials we face.

In the Gospel of St. Matthew 6:34, our Lord encourages us not to worry about tomorrow, saying, “Be not therefore solicitous (anxious) for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.” Our faith calls us to live in the present moment, entrusting our future into God’s loving hands. As we do so, we can experience the peace that surpasses all understanding. This verse is not a call to passivity or complacency. Instead, it is an invitation to surrender our anxieties and fears to God and to take action in accordance with His will. As we face the challenges of the future, we are called to be instruments of God’s love, justice, and mercy in the world.

Our faith in God as our refuge should inspire us to reach out to those in need, to be agents of positive change, and to strive for a better future for all. We can draw strength from our relationship with God, knowing that He equips us with the courage and wisdom to make a difference in our world.

Do not fear the future, God is our refuge, for He is always with us, leading us toward a future filled with hope and promise.

May God bless you +
