“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul. (Lamentations 3:24)
To state that the Lord is our portion is to confess that He is our greatest inheritance, our highest good, and the true treasure of the soul. Earthly wealth, honour, influence, and success are all temporary and uncertain, but God remains forever. The Prophet Jeremiah spoke these words amidst suffering, destruction, and desolation, yet his confidence did not rest upon favourable circumstances or human strength. Instead, his hope was firmly anchored in the unfailing mercy, faithfulness, and eternal love of the Lord, who never abandons those who trust in Him. Even when all visible reasons for hope appeared to have vanished, Jeremiah knew that God’s covenant love endured. His example teaches us that authentic hope is not founded upon what we possess or what we experience, but upon the unchanging character of God Himself.
This fact reaches its fullest expression in our Lord Jesus Christ. Through His Incarnation, Passion, Death, and glorious Resurrection, He has reconciled us to the Father and opened the way for us to share in the divine life. He has not merely shown us the path to salvation; He Himself is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. By His grace we become adopted children of God and heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven. In Christ we receive an inheritance that no earthly power can steal, no economic hardship can diminish, and no passing of time can corrupt. Every blessing that leads to eternal life flows through Him, making Him not simply a gift from God, but God’s greatest gift to humanity.
Our communion with Christ is nourished above all through the sacramental life of the Church. In Baptism we are cleansed from sin and made members of His Mystical Body. Through the Holy Sacrament of Penance we are restored whenever we fall. Most especially in the Most Holy Eucharist, Christ gives Himself entirely to His people, nourishing them with His true Body and Blood under the appearances of bread and wine. The Eucharist is not merely a symbol of Christ’s presence but His Real Presence among us. Every worthy reception of Holy Communion strengthens our union with Him, deepens sanctifying grace within our souls, and reminds us that the Lord truly is our portion. No earthly banquet can compare with the heavenly food that Christ freely offers to His faithful.
The saints throughout every age have borne witness that every created good, however beautiful or beneficial, is ordered towards God and can never take His place. Many of them willingly surrendered wealth, comfort, reputation, and even their very lives because they had discovered a treasure infinitely greater than anything the world could offer. Saint Augustine expressed this beautifully when he wrote that our hearts are restless until they rest in God. The more we seek lasting fulfilment in possessions, pleasures, or worldly acclaim, the more dissatisfied we become. Yet when Christ occupies the first place in our hearts, all other blessings are received with gratitude and used according to His holy will rather than becoming idols that draw us away from Him.
The Lord also becomes our portion in the midst of suffering. Every Christian will encounter trials, disappointments, sickness, bereavement, and moments of uncertainty. Such experiences can tempt us to discouragement if we rely solely upon ourselves. Yet Christ has transformed suffering through His Cross. When our trials are united with His Passion, they become occasions of grace, purification, and spiritual growth. The Lord does not always remove our crosses immediately, but He never leaves us to carry them alone. His grace sustains us, the Holy Spirit strengthens us, and His Blessed Mother and the communion of saints accompany us by their prayers. Thus, even in our darkest hours, we can still say with confidence that the Lord is our portion.
To live with the Lord as our portion requires daily conversion. It calls us to cultivate a life of prayer, frequent reception of the Sacraments, meditation upon the Holy Scriptures, works of charity, and faithful obedience to the commandments of God and the teachings of His Church. As our love for Christ deepens, our priorities begin to change. We become less concerned with accumulating earthly treasures and more eager to store up treasures in Heaven through acts of faith, hope, and charity. Our trust gradually shifts away from ourselves and rests more securely in the providence of our Heavenly Father, who knows our needs before we ask Him and lovingly provides all that is necessary for our salvation.
May each of us continually renew our confidence in the Lord, remembering that He alone is our lasting inheritance and eternal reward. The world offers many promises of happiness, yet all of them ultimately fade. Christ alone remains constant yesterday, today, and forever. If we seek Him above all else, we shall discover the peace that surpasses human understanding and the joy that no earthly circumstance can destroy. May our souls learn each day to echo the words of the Prophet Jeremiah with ever greater conviction: “The Lord is my portion.” Then, sustained by His grace in this life and purified by His mercy, we may one day rejoice forever in the fullness of His presence in the Kingdom of Heaven.
May God bless you +
